Newsletter #49: Style Guides and Us

Hello Recompilers,

This month, we say goodbye to Open Source Bridge after ten great years. A lot of smart people have a lot to say about how it went, what we learned, and how to move forward.

Recompiler is happy to be a community sponsor for Devopsdays Portland 2018 happening from September 11-13. This year we’ll be hearing from Recompiler contributor Heidi Waterhouse on Disaster Resilience The Waffle House Way: Flat-Tops, Feature Flags, And Finite State Machines — along with many other great talks. You can get 20% off your registration with the code RECOMPILERFRIENDS.

A style guide is more than a style guide. A style guide gives you the chance to promote unheard voices. A style guide gives its users the chance to do more with their own work and require less oversight. A style guide is magic… or at least really interesting to think about.

A bunch of companies are making a bunch of money off of contracts for ICE. A new visualization shows exactly who those companies are, where they’re located, and just how much money they’re making off of an agency that detains and deports some of us and our neighbors.

How to photograph the moon through image stacking. We talk about unaltered photos as more “truthful” or honest but sometimes it’s actually only through technical work that we arrive at images more faithful to both what is there and what we can observe.
